Montgomery muscles up for Hobby Stock sweep

Veteran Hobby Stock campaigner, Allen Montgomery(Ft. Worth) flexed his muscle with a heat/feature sweep over a large field of competitors. Montgomery got the lead from Iowa's Todd Reitzler on lap 6 and eased away for the opening night win.

It took three tries to get the 20-car IMCA Hobby Stock feature under way, with Reitzler grabbing the point on green. Montgomery then began to challenge James Kinniard for second. Kinniard and Reitzler made slight contact battling for lead giving Montgomery the opportunity to snag second and get along side Reitzler for the lead.

With Reitzler and Montgomery running door to door, Montgomery was able to get the nose out front on lap 6. As the lead trio slugged it out, Bryan Sewell, Justin Fowler and Charles Cosper reeled them in. Sewell slowed and pulled off from his top five spot on lap 8. At halfway it was Montgomery, Reitzler, Kinniard, Fowler and Cosper holding the front five spots.

Fowler then began to put the heat on Kinniard first trying high on lap 13, then looking low a couple laps later. After holding off Fowler, Kinniard then turned his efforts to Reitzler and second place as they diced through lapped traffic. With Reitzler and Kinniard battling behind him, Montgomery opened up a lead and put lapped in the middle. On the final lap Kinniard was able to get past Reitzler for second, but Montgomery, in the Ace Tire Service, Matt's Repair, Extreme Graphics, Texas Star Racing, Destroyer Chassis with a home built motor, was crossing the finish line with a comfortable win.

“It was a good handling car,” said Montgomery. “It handled like a dream. It went everywhere and anywhere I wanted it to go. We've done our homework going up north and racing with those guys. We've gotten better at it and caught up to their technology. Now we use it down here and take advantage of it.”

“Most of those guys from up there that come know what they're doing and they're not all over the place for the most part. They'll usually run a consistent line. I treat them like just another car, though they're experienced at it and how to handle a car a lot better.”

Montgomery masters Hobby Stock field again

Proving Friday night was no fluke, Ft. Worth's Allen Montgomery again showed the 20-car IMCA Hobby Stock field nothing but his rear bumper. Picking of where he left off, Montgomery grabbed the point on lap 1 and never looked back. James Kinniard made a run at Montgomery on the final lap but came up short giving Montgomery the back to back wins.

When green waved at the start of the 20 lapper, Montgomery beat Colby Deming into turn 1 for the lead. David Bissonette got pas Deming on lap 2 for second. The top five singled themselves out with Bryan Sewell and Andy Roller door to door for sixth. Kinniard got along side Deming on lap 6 and took third. Tobie Talk brought out the caution on lap 7 when he spun in turn 4.

On the restart Bissonette took a quick look on Montgomery, with Kinniard and Deming again side by side and Sewell getting around Charles Cosper for fifth. Coming to the midway point it was Montgomery, Bissonette, Kinniard, Deming and Sewell in the top five. Deming would slap and nearly climb the back stretch wall on lap 10 ending is top five run.

Shortly after green waved again Kinniard made a move on Bissonette getting along side on lap 15. Sewell closed in on that duo almost going three wide on lap 16. This gave Montgomery the chance to put some distance on the trio. Kinniard got by Bissonette on lap 17 and went on a charge for the leader. Kinniard caught Montgomery as the white flag waved but came up a little short as Montgomery in the Ace Tire Service, Extreme Graphics, Texas Star Racing, Matt's Repair, Destroyer Chassis took the back to back win.

Kinnaird KO’s Montgomery’s chance for three-peat

After following Allen Montgomery to the checkers on Friday and Saturday night’s, Mansfield’s James Kinnaird took it upon himself to spoil Montgomery’s look for back to back to back wins. Kinnaird used track position to get out front early and build a good lead, while Montgomery was forced to make his way through the front of the pack. Montgomery used lapped traffic to close in at one point, but Kinnaird again ran away once clear and grabbed the win.

As green waved on the field for the 20-lap feature, Kinnaird quickly jumped out front in turn 1, with Matt Drottz, Billy Taylor and Montgomery falling in line. A multi-car tangle in turn 1 brought out yellow on lap 1. Kinnaird got a good jump on the restart, with Montgomery finally getting past Taylor for third on lap 2. Charles Cosper followed in Montgomery’s tracks, taking fourth from Taylor a lap later.

Montgomery got along side Drottz for second on lap 4 and once clear found himself a half straightaway behind Kinnaird. Cosper was able to snag third from Drottz on lap 6. At the halfway point it was Kinnaird being run down by Montgomery, Cosper, Drottz and Taylor. Kinnaird caught lapped traffic with Montgomery closing up, but Montgomery got hung behind a slower car giving Kinnaird the chance to rebuild his lead.

Once clear Montgomery was not able to mount another charge as Kinnaird kept a good margin. Taylor would slide too high and fall back several spots, while Nyle Godwin and Tobie Talk ran side by side for seventh. Dale Roys and Jaron Shahon had simultaneous spins on lap 15, but both kept it going without bringing out a yellow. Kinnaird continued to hold an advantage over Montgomery in the final laps and grabbed the victory in the Big Jims Racing, Wes Machine Shop, Destroyer Chassis.

KSP Hobby Stock King of the Hill Race!

July 25, 2009

Three cars were already qualified for the Hobby Stock King of the Hill Race; Allen Montgomery, Jeremy Carter and Charles Cosper. However, since Charles Cosper qualified in on a night that his regular race track was closed, he wasn’t expected to return for the competition. That was the case so therefore, 8 cars were left to qualify in for the one-on-one duel.

The rest of the field came out of the heats; Chase Neill, Rick Barrett, Alvin Emery III, Jeff Kinnaird, Dennis Bissonnette, Bryan Sewell, Jeremy Montgomery and Brandon Taylor! Now, that’s a pretty elite list of names in the Texas IMCA Hobby Stock World! Who would rise to the occasion and be left standing on the heap after these Hard Core Hobby Stockers duel!

The drivers drew for their starting positions. The track was dry slick so every driver sure wanted to draw a start on the bottom! Trouble was, only half of them would!

First out for the one-on-one elimination round was the #4 of Chase Neill and the #98 of Rick Barrett! This would give us a taste of how the dry track conditions would play into the finishes! Two laps were all they would run… a white line in the middle of Turn 4 marked their starting spot on the track. If the cars weren’t even at that point, they would have to try it again!

Well, Chase wasted little time taking the lead in the first of 5 duels! He took that black BMF Chassis to the lead and secured his spot in the second round of competition!

Next out was the #3T of Alvin Emery III and the #38 of Allen Montgomery! Emery was in the cat bird seat with the preferred starting position on the bottom… they round out of Turn 4 and “stand on it!” They’re door to door thru Turn 1 and 2! Montgomery hangs tough down the backstretch and into Turn 3! As they head out of Turn 4 Emery starts to pull ahead just a little… Montgomery is having trouble staying with him as they round thru Turn 1 and 2!

He decides to change his strategy! He enters Turn 3 high and sets up for a dive under Emery as he hits the exit of Turn 4 and heads for the checkers! Emery slides up just enough to give Montgomery a slice under him and he flies off the top of the apex and shoots under Emery, stealing the win in as smooth a move as you could ask for! I’m sure Emery wondered what happened!

Next up was the #07 of Jeff Kinnaird and the #85 of David Bissonnette! Now this ought to be good… these two hot shoes were fast! Kinnaird draws the preferred inside starting spot! Bissonnette knows he has to beat him to the Turn and steal his line! They take the green flag and head off into Turn 1! Bissonnette drives it hard in and…. and…. and…. OHHH! It breaks loose and slips up and gets sideways in Turn 2! He knows he’s been beat and just pulls back to the infield, giving Kinnaird the win!

OK, so that brings us to Bryan Sewell and Jeremy Carter… they hit the dirt with Sewell in the sweet spot on the bottom! Sewell wastes little time in pulling ahead and taking it to the checkers in this one!

That leaves Jeremy Montgomery and Brandon Taylor to duel for the last transfer spot…. Or does it? You see, if you do the math, with 5 cars qualified to run 3 one-on-one eliminators, well… one of those cars would have no competitor! So, the 6th transfer spot would go to the driver with the narrowest margin of loss to the winner! Well, some of those races had been pretty close, if these two cars were to get in. they would have to race close!

Montgomery lines up in the pole position, Taylor on his outside! They round out of Turn 3 and stand on it as they hit the line in Turn 4! Montgomery gets the lead by a nose as they head down the front stretch! Taylor hangs tough on his outside! They sweep thru Turn 1 and 2, still almost door to door! Taylor battles back down the back stretch, drawing even as they enter Turn 3! They sweep thru Turn 3 and 4 with Montgomery getting the edge as they enter the front stretch!

Turn 1 again, Montgomery pulls ahead by half a car length! They stay that way as they tear off into Turn 3! Taylor drives it in hard but can’t get the drive off in that outer line and has to settle for a close second! Close enough to squeeze into the final transfer spot due to his close finish!

So, that pits Chase Neill against Jeff Kinnaird for the start of round 2! They line up with Chase on the pole and Kinnaird on his outside.  They run thru the first turns door to door! Jeff drops back and makes a charge under Chase in Turn 3 but can’t hold it! Jeff catches back up and tries the outside, driving hard into Turn 3 but Chase holds him off and gets the win!

Bryan Sewell and Jeremy Montgomery are staged for the next race! Sewell gets the pole position with Montgomery on his outside. They take the green and streak off into Turn 1. Montgomery drives hard into the turn trying to get the advantage, but breaks loose and hands an easy win to Sewell!

Allen Montgomery and Brandon Taylor square off in the final race of round 2; Allen on the inside and Brandon on the outside.  Allen takes charge of this race early and transfers on to the 3rd round.  Brandon races hard but Allen handles that inside line without a flaw!

Next up, Bryan Sewell and Chase Neill hit the dirt; Sewell on the pole! They run door to door the entire first lap! Chase really gives Allen a hard run and has the crowd on their feet! The fans scream their support as they tear out of Turn 4 and head off down the front stretch! They head into Turn 1, Sewell starts to pull ahead just a little as they rip out of Turn 2 and head down the back stretch! Sewell holds that edge as they tear thru 3 and 4 and cross the finish line!

That leaves Allen Montgomery and Bryan Sewell to duke it out for the top honors! Montgomery gets the pole! They tear off down the front stretch as the green drops! Allen gets a nose ahead in the first round of turns! Sewell hangs tough and makes Allen stand on it to keep the lead! Turn 3 and 4 has them battling hard but Allen keeps the edge! He gains a little more in Turn 1 and 2 and holds it thru 3 and 4! He takes the win and claims the title of King of the Hill at KSP!

Allen finished 2nd at Boyd Raceway on Friday, August 7th.  He is now tied for the points lead at Boyd Raceway.

Allen continued a great weekend with another top 5 finish at Kennedale Speedway Park on Saturday, August 8th.  Allen's 3rd place finish moved him into the points lead at KSP!
